Fort Young Hotel - Dominica

Fort Young Hotel is considered Dominica's leading hotel and overlooks the ocean on the quayside of Roseau, the capital of this beautiful, rugged island in the Caribbean. Royal Engineer George Bruce designed the original building, built on the slopes of a dormant volcano in 1770. Some of the original materials are still visible in the older parts of the hotel, volcanic rock, Yorkshire stone and Welsh slate. The Fort was the central police station from 1859 to 1957. Traders came here to ensure their measuring cups were accurate. Three ornate brass vessels, the official imperial measures, can be seen in the central courtyard. The Fort hailed every ship arrival with a salute from the 19th century bronze cannons, also in the central courtyard.  Fort Young's rich history can be seen in in the 32 original rooms, which have now been augmented by the addition of 38 deluxe rooms and suites, offering guests a combination of old world charm and spacious modern luxury. Guests can enjoy the hotel's various amenities, a rooftop Jacuzzi, spa treatment or dine on local specialties in the sea front restaurant, the Palisades, named after the original wooden fortifications where the restaurant's terrace is today.
The hotel has a great location in the heart of town and offers guests a number of activities such as enjoying the Caribbean Sea or trekking into the rainforest on the hills behind the hotel.  There is a professional dive centre at Fort Young, run by our friends at Buddy Dive, for those wanting to enjoy some of the best reefs in the Caribbean. This charming hotel offers guests a wonderful combination of holiday opportunities. Relaxation and fine diving, diving, snorkelling or hiking in the rain forest. All on your doorstep.
The local historian Lennox Honeychurch says of Fort Young :
"On the place where Carib/Kalinago traders made contact with Europeans; where French and English woodcutters built their early wooden forts; where 18th century generals played out the chess game of empire; and where 19th and 20th century policeman laid down the law, Fort Young has been able to take on a new lease of life into the 21st century."

Fort Young sits on the slopes of a rain forest covered volcano overlooking the ocean.
The hotel has a fascinating historical heritage and is located in the island's main town.
Modern accommodation, a wide choice of amenities and a superb ocean front restaurant.
This charming hotel offers guests a wonderful combination of holiday experiences.

Diving and Snorkelling

Dominica is renowned for its world class diving and snorkelling. Most diving is from custom built dive boats which leave at various times throughout the day. Most dives sites are less than 20 minutes away. Guests can dive or snorkel from the private jetty. The boats take very small groups of divers and snorkellers, usually 6 - 8 people. At most sites there will be just you and few (new) friends. However, boats can get booked up - it is important to book any diving or excursions you may wish to enjoy before you arrive on island. We can reserve your diving or adventure excursions your tailor-made itinerary.
We have worked with the excellent Buddy Dive crew on Bonaire for many years. Their presence at Fort Young is a key reason for us adding Fort Young and Dominica to our destinations. We know that we can rely on Buddy Dive to give our customers excellent service. As a PADI 5-star IDC and Universal Referral dive centre, Buddy Dive offers a full range of instruction courses, a dive shop, teaching facilities, rental gear, lockers, rinse tanks, camera tables and outdoor showers - all on the dock. Having the facilities, including tanks, on the dock makes it convenient for guests to dive when they wish, including diving at night. Whether you are diving, snorkelling or heading off into the bay to go whale watching, you can head straight onto the ocean from the hotel.
